Black & White Darkroom Techniques 101

Instructor: Micah Donovan

This course introduces basic darkroom procedures: developing black and white negative film and printing photographs from negatives. You will learn various techniques to enlarge and control the quality of prints with time to develop your own photographs. Each week lesson consists of a short orientation followed by supervised time in the darkroom.

Basic materials are included in course fee.  

Note: The deadline to withdraw from the first class is 5:00 pm on September 26. The deadline to withdraw from the second class is 5:00 pm October 4. A $15 withdrawal fee applies.

Lighting and Storytelling in Photography

Instructor: Michael Chambers

The key to photography is the magic of lighting. In this workshop, we will examine the nature of light with a special emphasis on lighting models especially while shooting portraits. All aspects of light, natural and artificial, will be explored. Participants will be encouraged to take on assignments reflecting their individual interests. 

This course presents a mentorship program for photography enthusiasts, inviting participants to share their interests and the direction in which they chose to explore.

To get the most from this class you should arrive with a working version of this software on your laptop.

Studio Portrait Workshop

October 30, 2022, 11 am-5 pm

The Hart House Camera Club will be hosting a Studio Portrait Workshop on Sunday, October 30 from 11 am-5 pm, led by photographer Michael Chambers. To participate student photographers have to reserve an 80-minute spot. 16 spots are available in total.

Shooting location: Hart House East Common Room

There will be four models in the studio. Each participant will have the opportunity to photograph each model in different lighting settings. Each participant will have 80 minutes in the studio. There will be a variety of lights and backdrops to work with. There will be an assortment of props available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own props and wardrobe items but it’s not necessary.

There is no formal training component as part of this workshop. Workshop leader Michael will be in the room to assist with lighting and other decisions. Michael will also be moving around the room and providing advice and feedback on what participants are doing.

Participants must agree in advance to share all their images with all the models they photograph. Participants must sign a contract on site which will specify legal obligations between the models and the photographers. A copy of the contract will be available to review in advance by the participants so that they fully understand the agreement.

There is no compensation provided to the models. In exchange for their time, they are receiving free shots for their portfolios.
